Biometrics can be used to identify a person when you want a more secure method other than just a card, pin number or password. They rely on capturing a person’s unique physical characteristics which are then converted into data which can be compared or searched. Each subject must first be enrolled and their biometric data saved as a template for future comparison.

There are two common types of biometric comparison.

• One to One Verification – The biometric system attempts to confirm an individual's identity by comparing a submitted sample to one or more previously enrolled biometric templates.
• One to Many Identification – The biometric system searches a database for a reference matching a submitted biometric sample, and if found, returns a corresponding identity.
